Zaca Mesa Winery’s 2009 Viognier

This month we are tasting Rhone varietals. These varietals originated in the Rhone region of France and feature a fresh floral aroma. Viogniers tend to be on the dry side and this particular 2009 Viognier, from Zaca Mesa Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, can be nicely paired with seafood. As our comments below show, we liked this varietal and are looking forward to another Rhone varietal next week.

“I know I shouldn’t be tasting a hint of chocolate, but that’s what I get for eating a chocolate bar right before I started drinking. As for the wine, it’s very nice and has a nice pepper kick.” – Blender

“This is one of the better Viogniers I have ever had. This would pair great with oysters.” – Sir Christopher Douglas

“So refreshing! Feels like summer as you drink this wine. Love the hint of white peach.” – Syrah

“A little dry on the palate and I love the lemon lime notes I’m getting. It’s good with the cheese we’ve paired it with, but would be even better with some seafood.” – Mr. Stigson

“Light and crisp. Very tasty!” – Ziggy

“A perfect spring wine. A lovely floral nose and mineral finish. Very elegant and one more reason I love Rhone varieties.” – Captain Chardonnay

“This is a great party wine…very drinkable. I had no idea what the heck a Viognier was. And I still don’t, but it is easy. And a label I could easily read. Nice.” – Frenchy

“This wine has a definite lingering finish. The aroma of honeysuckle gave it a real fresh, summer feel. Very good!” – Miss Moscato
